What are the benefits of having my HVAC duct system cleaned?
There are numerous benefits to your home, your health and your pocketbook. Overtime, and as a result of construction or remodeling your heating and air conditioning duct system will collect dust, dirt, pet hair and debris, no matter how clean you keep your home. All of this matter collects in your duct system. Ductwork is often dark and damp encouraging mold, mildew, bacteria and fungi to grow. Little by little these contaminants will disburse back into your home and the air you breathe.
If you or anyone in your home suffer from allergies, asthma or sinus congestion, or if you have pets that shed hair, having your air ducts professionally cleaned can dramatically improve your air quality and health. It will also reduce the amount of dust that collects in your home and on your furniture. And having your ductwork cleaned ensures it will operate more efficiently, often lowering your heating and cooling costs.
How should my ducts be cleaned?
The best way is called "source removal". The technician places your duct system under a negative pressure, using a specialized and powerful vacuum. The vacuum draws air through the ducts, then with different types of pneumatic tools the on-board compressed air dislodges dirt, dust and debris from your duct system. This debris is then carried down the ducts and into the vacuum hose and emptied into the truck-mount unit dirt bin. Some companies use portable units which must be brought into the home. These units filter all of the dust and debris inside your home, which could lead to possible recontamination of the duct system.
How long should it take to clean an average residential HVAC system?
There are many factors that determine the amount of time needed to properly clean a duct system. How many systems the home has, the accessibility of the vacuum system, the duct work and manpower all figure in. The average three or four bedroom home will take approximately 2 to 4 hours to complete.
How often should my ducts be cleaned?
NADCA recommends every 3 to 5 years. If someone in your home has asthma, chronic allergies, sinus congestion, or you have pets in the home, the air ducts should be cleaned more often.
Will having my ducts cleaned make a mess?
With our vacuum system all of the dirt, dust and debris are vacuumed back to the truck, outside, where it is captured into a holding compartment. This will not make any mess in your home. Some companies will use portable equipment which, in most cases, has to be brought inside the home to perform the cleaning. This means that some of the dust and debris they remove has the possibility of recontaminating your home's duct system.
If I am having my furnace replaced, should I have the ducts cleaned before, during, or after the installation?
You can have the duct cleaning performed whenever it is convenient for you and your HVAC contractor.
If my home is under construction or being remodeled, should I have the duct cleaning done before or after?
AFTER! Make sure all of the drywall sanding, wood sanding, wood cutting, carpet laying, etc. is completely finished before having your air ducts cleaned. We strongly recommend waiting until all of the "dirty work" has been completed.
